My local branches are not big enough that skimping a couple inches between rows would gain significant space to add more rows, but would make passing other folk difficult. Rooms that are big enough already have a good number of rows. If you really need to optimize space, the next step is the rolling museum shelving, but that is not a space for the general public to muck about in :}
While I like browsing the shelves, perhaps that patron should use the electronic catalog and order the books they are interested in?
We are having one of our library floors redone this year — you will finally be able to get a wheelchair in between the ranges and between one end of the ranges and the wall. (You could get one past the other end of the ranges before.)
