Zip codes are available from http://www.usps.com – Mail & Ship – Look up a Zip code. I know that would not promote human interaction, but it is more efficient than asking the library to do it for you.
I think most of us know that, but that wasn’t the point of the comic strip above. The whole idea, of course, is that most of these situations are absurd and/or ironic, and that’s why they’re funny.
PS: The questioner obviously doesn’t need the ZIP codes or any other information; he or she just wants to talk to someone and keep them talking as long as possible and will ask the person on the desk to read them every name in a phone book (if the library still has any of those or look them up on line) like the old-fashioned congressional filibuster just to keep the library worker talking.
We have a guy who calls the library for random business and government phone numbers every day or two, all of which are available online, but he doesn’t have a computer, so it’s no help, and I think he likes the interaction, too!
