An aspect of the trope about “teaching children to be better” that is seldom discussed. What if your child’s “improvements” show what an unpleasant person you are. Just because someone is biologically capable of bringing forth a child, does not mean they are qualified to be a parent :{

In this case, the child has learned a bit of kindness, probably from school, rather than from the behaviour modeled by the parent. It’s probably more common than I’d like. I hope the mother does not isolate her child from the world as a response.

In my “to read” stack is a book with a title like _Please Yell at my Kid_.
The gist, as I gather it: It’s better if people are willing to hold children to a standard of decent behavior in public, even if the only relationship they have to the child is being within earshot. And related matters.
What related matters? I don’t know. I haven’t read the book. Could be about people who are not kids. Behavior which is good, or is socially neutral but suboptimal. Or more nearly optimal than what most people do.
If it isn’t, maybe I should write it.
