It’s funny that the librarian ran out to catch up with the patron. What I’ve seen in libraries that I have worked at is that they’ll just call the patron to explain the mistake and then keep the book that they intended on borrowing aside for them with a note about the not checked out book needing to be brought back. Or perhaps that book was for the patron who just went to the restroom.
