The last time we visited the idea of shelf-ready materials, the samples provided by our primary suppliers did not hit our quality expectations. We’ll take that book, and if our selectors decide not to shelf it, at least the Friends of the Library will help it find a home.

Useful PSA. I’m puzzled by the fatalism of the last panel, but it may be my privilege of having a library that has almost always bought the books I’ve suggested.

That fatalism is either a reflection of a budget reality or of where the character is (or both). 🙂

Having worked as a collection development librarian under severe budget restraints (at the time. the library had no public funding and was supported by donations), I can say that it can be possible to fulfill the vast majority of patron requests if you are dedicated to it in principle. That said, I’ve worked for larger systems with multiple patrons that put in hundreds of requests, which is simply impossible with any budget. This patron’s singular request should be a piece of cake.

We explain there is a process to have the library order a book, there is a form that needs to be submitted. But there is no guarantee that it will be added.
