I think the kid may have it backwards. The raptor dinosaurs (Dromaeosauridae) evolved into modern birds and were generally meat-eaters, with bird-like hips. This family includes the famous T-Rex.

Oops, Tyrannosaurus rex was actually a theropod, a closely related groups of dinosaurs, still with a bird-like pelvis, and definitely carnivorous.
