I’m bothered that the male supposedly-a-librarian-type is using veiled threats of physical violence to win his case. I feel this person should be ushered out of the convention post-haste.
I didn’t indent it to read that way. He’s supposed to be just showing off.
I got an impression halfway between the two. The impressiveness of being bigger than someone else is always predicated on the ability to be physically dominant over them, even if you’re not trying to suggest that you’d use it. And someone who knows that they’re not going to use it might not think about that, but someone whose gender means that they have to be aware of being targeted for physical violence from men is usually going to see that connection and implication.
I just saw it as grasping at straws.
