Grant: Let me guess -- it’s another book.
Martin: This one is for my permanent collection.

Grant: But you haven’t read all the books you’ve already got.
Martin: My collection is aspirational.

Grant: You already have too many books.
Martin: Well I need this one, too.

Martin: And one day I might even read it.

  1. Nathan Filizzi says:

There’s no such thing as “too many books.”

    1. Estelle says:

The only time someone has too many books is if they can’t store them all and there’s a danger that someone will trip over a stack of books and get hurt. Somehow I can’t see Martin taking so poor care of his collection as to leave piles of books on the floor, though. I CAN imagine him getting wall to wall bookshelves in every room in his home and new furniture with built in slots and shelves for books in order to hold them all.

      1. Alejandro says:

A friend of mine had so many his landlady told him he couldn’t get any more shelves because the floors wouldn’t support the weight. She agreed to let him move to a larger apartment mid lease without penalty.

  2. matt says:

i had to make an effort to read the aspirational works and then give them away. 3 given away, maybe 10 more physically bought.

  3. Melissa Drake says:

The Japanese, bless them, even have a term for this, Tsundoku, which means a book pile, but more specifically the tendency to collect more new books when you haven’t read the old ones yet.

  4. Michael says:

I read my aspirational collection sequentially, in order of acquisition. As of today, I’m only 14 years behind!

    1. Bill Michtom says:

      Stop bragging!

    2. Chris says:

      I thought I was bad at 5 years 🙂

      1. Elliot says:

I lost track of how many years so many years ago that I have no idea how far behind I am!
