Laura: This is the perfect time to implement a gender neutral bathroom!
Lucy: I’m not sure our patrons are ready for that.

Patron: Closed? But I need it now!
Lucy: There are other options. Go upstairs and turn left. You’ll see the foreign language newspapers. Walk past --

Patron: Now! Now! Now!

Laura: Just like that we’re socially progressive AND actively serving our patrons needs.

I am thinking he may want to lock the door.

  2. I’ve never understood separate single person toilets. It’s not like men and women could use them at the same time.

    1. Bill Michtom says:

YES! I totally agree. I have suggest to many establishments that they stop distinguishing them by sex. Even calling it “gender neutral” is strange. We don’t label the bathrooms in our homes in any way & no one gets confused.

    2. Elliot says:

Well, two or more people of the same gender could go in at the same time if they decided to do so, but I suppose that’s their business.

And, I agree with you that if it’s a lavatory that only has facilities for one person, and it’s lockable, putting a gender sign on the door is superfluous. The only reason that such signs as “gender neutral” are affixed to public restrooms, I believe, is so users can feel comfortable knowing that their gender won’t stop them from using the WC, no matter what it is or how they define it themselves.

      1. Elliot says:

Oops! I meant to say that two or more people of _different_ genders could go in at the same time…although certainly the same can apply to people of the same gender, but it could get crowded in there!

  3. Ed Rhodes says:

Our library had four single user men’s and four single user ladies for years before someone caught on as to how stupid that was! Now, they have eight restrooms!
