Stephanie: It looks like you have a book that’s overdue.
Patron 1: I’m sure I brought that one back.
Patron 2: She wasn’t really sure.

Stephanie: I’ll change it’s status to missing.
Patron 2: The library lady quietly entered the word “liar” into the woman’s permanent record.

Stephanie: Don’t listen to him. I believe you.
Patron 1:  I’m telling the truth!
Patron 2: She protested too loudly for anyone to really believe her.

Stephanie: I really do believe you.
Patron 1: Thanks.
Patron 2: And yet the missing book sat somewhere, unfound and unread, with little hope for justice.

    I keep expecting someone to address the “narrator” in some way. Maybe “what are you doing?” or “go away.”
