Esther: I never said that you did.
Patron: I didn’t drop all these books.
Esther: Would you like to help me pick them up anyway?
Patron: Why should I? This isn’t my fault!
Patron: Then could you please at least not help somewhere else?

I find it easier to say I believe a patron’s preposterous story over the phone or by email than in physical presence. In the defense of customers, though, I must say the MOST preposterous story, to my knowledge, that my team got over the phone was easily confirmed with a simple inspection of the delivery confirmation. OK, the whole “crazed loon holding shipment hostage” wasn’t verified, but “delivered to neighbor” was.
