Martin should move to Grand Rapids and work at our library. In addition to the reference area for books that can only be used in the library, we have an entire floor devoted to Michigan history (which includes local fiction) with books and other resources that must not leave the floor. Within in that department, we have 3 rooms that can only be accessed by staff. One is climate controlled and has a refrigerated section for some particularly delicate books.
The one downtown off Fountain? I used to go there all the time in the early 90’s when I was at KCAD.
Yes, but you wouldn’t recognize it now. The place was completely renovated. The Keeler section was gutted and totally redone and the Reyerson (old, old part) was restored.
Oh yeah, most of Grand Rapids has changed since I lived there. 🙂
Fellow Grand Rapids patron here. Are you talking about the one on Library St.? I love that library! I go there constantly, along with Yankee Clipper.
It seems to me that both these guys are sort of the antitheses of what a librarian should be: Martin who can’t stand anyone but he touching “his” books and hating e-books while Grant hates print! But, I love how they both work off each other si dysfunctionally. In turth, while they are caricatures, which is why I love this strip so much, all libraries to a lesser or greater degree seem to thrive with organized chaos! I’ve worked in, and been a user of, enough of them to know that.
I meant “_so_ dysfunctional” and “in _truth,_” of course. From all my years of working as a librarian, I’m pretty good at dysfunction myself (although I brought it with me _before_ I ever worked in a library)! 😉
The eternal struggle between “I want everyone to experience the same joy I have through these books.” and “AIGH! STOP TOUCHING THINGS; I JUST FIXED THAT!!”
